Permaculture & Biomimicry projects

Here follows a couple of my projects in the design methods of Permaculture and Biomimicry..

Trailer home -
DIY Compact living

I was volunteering at the Ormanevi collective in rural Turkey doing organic farming, holistic grazing management and needed a place to were they had their sheep.. It needed to be small and ideally movable - and it would host 2 people in the winter.

We discussed it together and decided to try some kind of trailer home. My proposition was the following off grid design that could be easily built by hand on a 2x4 meter trailer.. With foldable tables and beds and with the top of the kitchen used as a bedside table you could live both 1-2 people in the winter and more than so in the summer.. Solar pannels on the roof would run a small fridge and stove.

Competition finalists -Biomimicry SDC

The whole trip to Boston started in autum 2012 when we decided to compete in Biomimicry student design challenge 2012. Biomimicry is a way to imitate the solutions in nature to solve man’s problems. The theme of this year’s competion was “Water wise” and our team made a system for buildings that could collect, transport and clean water.

Among 9 other teams out of over 300 competed teams all around the world we reached the second round in the competition. We had the opportunity to develop a business plan with support from a celebrated startup company from San Fransisco; Startup Nectar.

We reached the final also in the second round and got invited to present our project at the Biomimicry global conference

Permaculture Design Certificate-course

As part of my PDC-certification course in 2012 I did a landscape and garden design on my parents farm. After both a site analysis and a people and need analysis we decided that the focus of the design was to:

- Siplify the garden work and decreasing the workload.
- Take care of excess water around the house.
- Find good placements and synergetic relationships for new and old functions: greenhouse, vegetable garden, hen-house, edible forest garden, sheep, etc.
We worked with zoning analysis with the overall farm and I zoomed in to make a design for the garden. During the design work I also learned to make a map from scratch (by hand) using the Triangulation method.
